Ecomoniser Part of a watertube boiler where return or make-up cold water is heated inside tubes (often extended surface) over which pass comparatively low-temperature combustion products.
Ecosystem the “team” formed by biological organisms and the environment where they live
Eddy length scales Length scales [m] associated with turbulent flows - size of energy-containing eddies
Eddy time scales Time scales (see also - eddy turn-over) [s]: Life duration of an eddy. Can be applied to eddies of all length scale (T or t).
Eddy turn-over See also Turbulence time scale [s]: Life duration of an eddy. Can be applied to eddies of all length scale (T or t).
EDS Acronym - Energy Dispersive Spectrum
EDX Acronym - Energy Dispersive X-ray analysis
Effective diameter The diameter of a nozzle that would produce the same thrust as a fluid jet, but from a fluid whose density is equal to the to density of the mixture of the original jet and the entrained surrounding fluid
Effective diffusivity The diffusivity inside a porous medium. It can be expressed from the diffusivity, multiplying by the porosity of the porous medium and dividing by the tortuosity of the porous medium.
Effective heating value Low heating value minus the energy required to vaporise the water contained in the fuel as moisture.
Effective nozzle diameter The diameter of a nozzle that would produce the same thrust as a fluid jet, but from a fluid whose density is equal to the to density of the mixture of the original jet and the entrained surrounding fluid
Ejector A jet pump used to pump a fluid from an enclosure and eject it to the surroundings
Emissive Power A term generally used to describe the rate of radiant energy emitted per unit area of plane surface in all directions within the hemisphere (2p steradians) above it
emissivity The ratio of the thermal radiation emitted by a body to that emitted by a black body at the same temperature. Emissivity is often a function of wavelength, temperature and direction
emittance For real surfaces, the ratio of radiation emitted by the surface to that emitted by a black body at the same temperature, equivalent to emissivity.
Endothermic reaction A chemical reaction that absorbs heat
Energy Energy is the capacity for doing work; it exists in a variety of forms including mechanical (potential and kinetic), electrical, light (electromagnetic), sound and nuclear. In terms of industrial combustion, the main source of energy is from fossil fuels with a small but growing contribution from biofuels.
Energy crops Crops grown specifically for their fuel value. These include food crops such as corn and sugarcane, and non-food crops such as poplar trees and switchgrass.
Enthalpy Total heat content, expressed in units of energy per mass such as Joules per kilogram or Btu per pound, above that at an arbitary set of conditions chosen as the base or zero point.
Environmental acidification The Environmental acidification process is a complex chemical and atmospheric phenomenon that occurs when emissions of sulphur and nitrogen compounds and other substances are transformed by chemical processes in the atmosphere, often far from the original sources, and then deposited on earth in either wet or dry form. The wet forms, popularly called "acid rain," can fall to earth as rain, snow, or fog. The dry forms are acidic gases or particulates
EPA Acronym - Environmental Protection Agency
Epochs In an artificial neural network, the number of iterations undertaken to train the network.
Equivalence ratio The stoichiometric air/fuel ratio divided by the actual air/fuel ratio (symbol = phi). Consequently, phi = 1 indicates stoichiometric conditions, and phi>1 indicates fuel rich conditions
Equivalent diameter A measurement for a non-circular duct representing its shape in the same way a diameter represents a circle. Generally, the equivalent diameter can be calculated as D(ref) = square root of (4A/pi) where A is the cross sectional area, and D(ref) is the equivalent diameter.
ESP Acronym – Electro-Static precipitation/precipitator
Ethane C2H6: the second most simple hydrocarbon. It consists of two carbon atoms joined together, with three hydrogen atoms attached to each carbon atom.
Eutectic A mixture of substances having the lowest freezing point of all possible mixtures of the substances.
Eutrophication Eutrophication is a condition in an aquatic ecosystem where high nutrient concentrations stimulate blooms of algae (e.g., phytoplankton).
Excel Microsoft spreadsheet and analysis programme used in this combustion file.
Excel Workbook An assembly of one or more Microsoft Excel “worksheets” or spreadsheets together form an Excel “workbook”.
Excess air Combustion air supplied to a burner or flame in excess of the amount needed to completely combust the fuel
Excess air ratio The ratio of the amount of combustion air actually supplied to a burner or flame to the theoretical amount needed to completely combust the fuel.
exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) Process of redirecting a portion of the burnt gas (exhaust gas) back into the flame with the effect of reduced emissions and fuel consumption.
Exinite A coal maceral group primarily consisting of spores, resins and cuticles (leaves) - also known as Liptinite
Exothermic reaction A chemical reaction that liberates heat, such as the burning of a fuel
Extended Zeldovich mechanism The two reactions proposed by Zeldovich to explain the formation of NO from atmospheric nitrogen and oxygen at elevated temperatures, supplemented with a third reaction accounting for the influence of OH radicals that can form during combustion
Extinction coefficient The fractional attenuation of a beam of radiation per unit distance through a transparent medium.
